Chronic sinusitis refers to a sinus infection that has lasted 12 weeks or more. This is the most common problem we see.
Chronic Sinusitis Symptoms
- Facial congestion, pressure, pain or fullness
- Discolored nasal discharge or postnasal drip
- Headache or facial pain worsening with head movements
- Loss of sense of smell
- Fatigue
- Cough triggered by post nasal drainage
- Halitosis
- Dental pain from maxillary sinus involvement
Chronic Sinusitis Diagnosis
Depending on your history some or all of these options may be needed to make a diagnosis.
- Physical exam
- Cultures to identify fungal, viral, or bacterial infections
- Checking for immune deficiencies
Chronic Sinusitis Treatment Options
The goals are to open obstructed sinuses, improve drainage, treat any infection, and prevent recurrence.
The specific recommendations will depend on your circumstances.
Causes and Risk Factors of Chronic Sinusitis
- Allergies - indoor/outdoor allergens like pollen, dust mites, pet dander
- Deviated nasal septum or nasal polyps blocking sinus drainage
- Respiratory infections from viruses, bacteria or fungi
- Tooth infections spreading to maxillary sinuses
- Asthma or cystic fibrosis
- Smoking and secondhand smoke exposure
