Sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT) is an allergy treatment that involves placing allergen extracts under the tongue to induce tolerance. Also known as “allergy drops,” SLIT provides an alternative to allergy shot regimens.
Sublingual immunotherapy is primarily used for patients with mild to moderate allergies.
The allergenic extracts are placed under the tongue and held there for 2 minutes before swallowing. This exposes the oral mucosa to the allergens, allowing immune tolerance to develop over time.
SLIT is done daily at home. Treatment is typically given for 3-5 years.
