Septoplasty

SEPTOPLASTY

What Is Septoplasty?

Septoplasty is a surgical procedure that straightens the nasal septum — the wall of bone and cartilage that separates the two nostrils. When the septum is deviated or crooked, it can block airflow through the nose, leading to chronic congestion, snoring, mouth breathing, and sinus infections.

At Atkins Expert Sinus Care in San Antonio, we specialize in minimally invasive septoplasty procedures that help patients breathe easier and experience lasting relief from nasal obstruction.

Why Is Septoplasty Performed?

The goal of septoplasty is to improve nasal airflow by correcting structural issues inside the nose. It may be recommended when conservative treatments — like nasal sprays or allergy medications — haven’t worked.

You May Be a Candidate for Septoplasty If You Have:

  • Chronic nasal blockage, especially on one side
  • Mouth breathing, particularly during sleep
  • Frequent sinus infections
  • Snoring or disrupted sleep
  • Postnasal drip or constant throat clearing
  • Recurring nosebleeds
  • Facial pressure or headaches not resolved with other treatments

Many patients don’t realize they have a deviated septum until they undergo an exam using nasal endoscopy or sinus imaging.

What Happens During the Septoplasty Procedure?

Septoplasty is typically performed as an outpatient procedure under local or general anesthesia.

What to Expect:

  • A small incision is made inside the nose (no visible scars)
  • The surgeon repositions or removes parts of the deviated cartilage and bone
  • The nasal lining is preserved and reattached
  • No changes are made to the external appearance of your nose

The procedure typically takes 30 to 60 minutes, and patients can return home the same day.

Recovery After Septoplasty

Most patients recover quickly with minimal discomfort. We’ll provide detailed post-operative instructions to support a smooth recovery.

Aftercare Includes:

  • Mild swelling or congestion for a few days
  • Avoiding strenuous activity for 1–2 weeks
  • Saline nasal rinses to promote healing
  • Follow-up appointments to check progress and results

Many patients notice a significant improvement in breathing within just a few weeks after surgery.
